The Promise of Lithium

Thomas Guttuso

For most patients, a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s places a looming specter over the future without any proven treatment to stop the inevitable progression of symptoms.

Based on a serendipitous discovery in a patient with Parkinson’s, The Promise of Lithium describes, in easy-to-understand language, the compelling body of evidence dating as far back as 1959 supporting the use of over-the-counter (OTC) lithium supplementation to potentially slow the progression of both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Discover the pros and cons of the two OTC lithium formulations available and the important background information you will need to decide if OTC lithium is right for you and at what dosage.

If you or a loved one is living with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, time is of the essence to quell their destructive processes. The Promise of Lithium provides great hope that simple OTC lithium supplementation may preserve these patients’ futures.

Dr. Tom Guttuso is a respected neurologist who now has proven himself to be a highly talented writer. In his book, he talks in detail about scientific issues related to the causes of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and the potential role of lithium as a treatment, yet he manages to do so in a highly engaging and thoughtful way that anyone can understand. If you want to understand the data on lithium and its potential promise for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, there is no better source than this book.

Thomas Guttuso, Jr., MD, is a professor of neurology at the University of Buffalo and a member of the Parkinson Study Group and International Movement Disorder Society. He has been treating patients with Parkinson’s for over twenty years and has published over thirty articles in leading medical journals.

Dr. Guttuso’s research has focused on developing serendipitous new discoveries using approved medications. Through “drug repurposing,” old medications known to be safe can quickly and inexpensively be tested for new applications. Dr. Guttuso has used this paradigm to make four medical discoveries, the first three of which are now being prescribed to postmenopausal women with hot flashes and women with severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. His fourth discovery became the origin of this book.
